One of the fun things to do in George Town Penang, is to seek out the many street art murals and have your photo taken with them. There are well over a hundred of them now. It all started back in 2012 when the Penang Tourist Board commissioned unknown artist Ernest Zacharevic, from Lithuania, to paint 6 murals in places of historical importance for the George Town festival.
The art scene in Penang has really taken off since then, and is now one of the main tourist attractions, alongside the historical architecture of George Town.
Unlike the British street artist Banksy, Earnest’s work is less political and more social, telling the tale of every day life.
Part of the charm of Penang’s street art is the ever decaying nature of it. The rendered walls upon which it has been painted are forever slowly crumbling, due to the hot and damp climate in Malaysia.
For most of the day, there is a queue of people waiting the have their photo taken with the most famous piece of street art, the two children on a bicycle.
The following photos are just a few more examples of the street art that can be found around George Town
